THE
COURSE - IT'S A BEAR!
| Miles |
|
| 1-4 |
The first mile is uphill (sorry about that). Watch for our course monitor who will direct you to take the road to your left, heading down to the Beaver Lake area. You’ll be directed to take a right-hand turn (east) to Beaver Lake on this gently rolling 2-mile stretch. There’s a nice downhill for ½ mile to a Runner Checkpoint at Aid Station #1. Be sure to enjoy the view of beautiful Beaver Lake as you circle the Aid Station and double back, now heading west on Beaver Lake Road. Watch for Runners coming in the opposite direction as they head for Aid Station #1. At Mile 4, you’ll be directed to turn right onto a one-track trail. Watch out for the steep downhill!
|
| 5-8 |
Runners leave the trail and turn left onto Beaver Lake Road. Mile 6 is downhill, then back up along the west side of Murray Lake. Runners take a narrow trail down to the north end of Murray Lake. Leaving Murray, Runners continue east. |
| 9-12 |
Miles 9 and 10 are gently rolling. Runners leave the road to run on a primitive trail, and then back to the dirt road. |
| 13-16 |
This stretch is the most rugged part of the course, and one of the most difficult in terms of elevation gain and loss. It contains the steepest downhill section. Watch your step! Runners cross the railroad tracks with the help of special crossing guards. If a train holds you up, take advantage of the breather and know that our capable mathematicians will deduct your waiting time from your finish time! After crossing the tracks, you come out onto pavement and “civilization” (porta potties). Enjoy the beauty at this end of Whitefish Lake where you’ll see horse ranches, wetlands, and maybe even a llama or two! Our lead runner in 2005 saw a black bear!
|
| 17-20 |
Enjoy beautiful views of Whitefish Lake as you run along the northeast shore. This stretch is a gentle but persistent climb.
|
| 21-24 |
This part of the course is slightly downhill and we think the easiest 4 miles of the day. Enjoy views of City Beach.
|
| 25-26.2 |
Welcome to Whitefish’s brand-new bike path! Cross 2nd Street with the help of our friendly Police Department, and enjoy views of the Whitefish River. Turn right onto Baker and head for THE FINISH. Congratulations! You’ve just finished the Two Bear Marathon!
